Michaels Engineering will also conduct a visual survey of
heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. If the
configuration of ventilating systems permits, we will estimate the
quantity of outdoor air being provided to the building under worst
case conditions. Where accessible, we will check the condition of
filters, heat exchangers and condensate drains. The impact of energy
management strategies will be considered as part of the HVAC survey.
Flow visualization techniques will be used to determine
the direction of air movement in special use areas of the school.
Of particular concern are those areas where air contaminants are
routinely generated: wood or metal shops, kitchens, mechanical equipment
rooms, locker rooms, or areas where cleaning supplies are stored. The
purpose of this step is to assure that proper balancing of ventilating
systems results in the flow of air from "cleaner" to "dirtier" areas of
the building.
