For public school facilities
without complaints of Sick Building Syndrome or Building Related
Illness, our protocol for a proactive assessment will reflect the
guidance provided in the U.S. EPA's IAQ Tools for Schools Action Kit,
while also including critical aspects of the tried and proven EPA/NIOSH
reference entitled Building Air Quality, A Guide for Building Owners
and Facility Managers.
Our IAQ professionals will
develop an initial IAQ Profile which describes the structure,
function, use and occupancy of your building -- those aspects that have
the potential to affect indoor air quality. The IAQ Profile will also
summarize baseline data that is crucial in the development of an IAQ
Management Plan.
In cases where complaints of
symptoms related to SBS have been received, the protocol for a
reactive assessment will include and focus upon Building
Diagnostics. As part of our diagnostic effort, Michaels will interview
affected individuals, answer questions, and attempt to identify patterns
in the location and timing of complaints. This information will then be
used to coordinate further investigation and contaminant sampling
focusing on areas of the building occupied by these persons.
Michaels Engineering can also
assist school personnel in the development and implementation of an
IAQ Management Plan adapted specifically for their facility. An IAQ
Management Plan is intended to avert IAQ problems by emphasizing
preventive actions through increased awareness, and to resolve IAQ-related
complaints as they may occur (see the Tools for Schools section).
